Sister Anne Brooks, DO

Answering the call to heal.

Alumna, 1982
Tutwiler, Mississippi

When Sister Anne Brooks hears a call, she answers.

In 1955, Brooks became a nun in the order of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. Then at the age of 40, after she was treated successfully for rheumatoid arthritis by an MSU physician, she decided to begin medical school at MSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine. Once she graduated, she headed south to Tutwiler, Mississippi, a medically underserved rural town where she helped reopen an abandoned clinic–and where she has lived ever since.

Reflecting on why she chose to become a doctor, Brooks cites a passage from scripture that reads, “Freely you have received. Freely give.”

“There’s that push in me to want to give and to dedicate my life to caring for patients so they will care about themselves,” Brooks says.
