Taking education to heart.
Providence, Rhode Island
Jasmine Gary used to tell the elementary school students she taught that life is bigger than “the right now.” After spending three years in Brooklyn, New York, as a corps member with Teach for America, Gary is taking her own advice to heart as she applies her degree in social relations and her passion for education.
Observing the shortcomings of urban schools made Gary want to speak up for students she saw getting left behind. As a graduate student at Brown University, she took on an internship with Detroit Public Schools and then a job with a Title One organization in Rhode Island where today she works with schools in low-income areas.
Eventually, Gary wants to bring what she learns back to Michigan and to help shape policy that affects urban schools and students.
